Overview

Showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show, it is conceived to attract those looking for a stunning and yet highly equipped sedan which does not lag behind in style, comfort, performance or fuel economy. The Optima Hybrid delivers an estimated 40 miles per gallon thanks to its engine system which includes several innovations that provide an exceptional hybrid performance and efficiency.

Power and performance

The 2012 Optima Hybrid employs a full parallel hybrid system which can be driven in zero emission, full-electric drive mode up to 62 miles per hour or in blended gas-electric mode at any speed. The powertrain shuts off completely to eliminate emissions and idle fuel consumptions when the car is stopped and the electrical load is low. It blends a 20kw electric motor with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 166 hp to deliver a highway fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon. The hybrid system is mated to a six-speed electronic automatic transmission. The Optima Hybrid can run on electric-only power under light acceleration and sufficient battery charge. The vehicle gets power from a lithium-polymer battery mounted behind the rear seat.

Body and styling

The Optima Hybrid sports a striking design and is equipped ultimate interior features. Its front grille design, 16-inch alloy wheels, head lamps, LED tail lamp design, door handles and heated outside mirrors stand out from the crowd making a new style statement. The interior stylish appointments include dual zone automatic temperature control with rear vents, push-button start with smart key, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, a six-speaker audio system and chrome interior door handles. A Premium Technology Package with upscale amenities like a panoramic sunroof, unique 17-inch alloy wheel design, a navigation system with back-up camera and SIRIUS Traffic and an eight-speaker Infinity audio system is available.

Safety Features

Kia has taken extra care to ensure that its first hybrid sedan is completely safe and secure for travel. The Optima Hybrid includes six airbags (dual advanced front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain), four-wheel antilock brakes (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a Traction Control System (TCS), a Brake Assist System (BAS) and Hill Assist Control (HAC) as standard safety equipment. The other features are front active headrests, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH), side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions, and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
